Rhinelander High School

Rhinelander High School, abbreviated RHS, is a high school in Rhinelander, Oneida County, Wisconsin USA. As of the 2007-08 school year, it had a student population of 1,091. The student population has been decreasing because of the increasing number of students attending the local charter school, the decline in families moving into the area, and economic instability.

The school shares its mascot, the Hodag, a mythological creature, with the city. Sports teams at the school have uniforms in the school colors of kelly green, white, and black.

Academics

As one of the largest high schools in the Wisconsin Northwoods, Rhinelander High School has a diverse range of courses, including two foreign languages - Spanish, and German. The choir and band are viewed by school administration as a way to "engage students into learning." The school also features career academies for students.

Activities

The school holds the record for the most consecutive wins in Mock Trial, a nation-wide high school activity where students study a court case selected by the state and then play attorney and witness roles in a simulated court setting, arguing both sides of the case before judges (who are practicing and retired lawyers). The championship round at the state level is argued in front of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.[1] The team has 24 regional championships in 26 years of competition and 14 state championships, including eight of the last ten years; RHS won the National High School Mock Trial Championship in 1989 and has finished second twice. The faculty advisor is Kathy Vick-Martini, and attorney coaches are Mike Bloom and Jim Jacobi.

In 2007, the Rhinelander debate team took second place at the state competition in the novice division. On December 13, 2008, the team took first place at the Hortonville state final. Rhinelander's debate team is led by Mrs. Angela Schaffer.

Sports

In the 2008-2009 school year, the Antigo and Merrill schools left the WVC conference to join the Great Northern Conference. Rhinelander sports include football, soccer, swimming, wrestling, gymnastics, Nordic and Alpine skiing, snowboarding, baseball, softball, track and field, volleyball, hockey, basketball, cross country, tennis, dance team, and golf. A notable team at the school is the dance team who is defending Twenty seven time national champions.
